HISTORIC RESTORATION - Fort Leavenworth, Kansas

MCC has successfully completed interior and exterior historic restoration projects for a number of facilities across the United States. From the Avery Point Lighthouse at the University of Connecticut to the historic structures at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas — and in many other locations — MCC has provided conscientious, careful renovation and repair services that help preserve and maintain the historic quality of these buildings for clients, local residents, and the visiting public.

Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, is the oldest continuously active military post west of the Mississippi and is a National Historic Site. In fact, more than 75 percent of the Fort's structures are on the National Historic Register. Repairs and renovations of these structures were designed and completed to preserve their historical integrity — a consideration that MCC plans into all projects that carry this special designation. Materials were chosen to replicate existing materials as closely as possible, mitigating public concern over maintaining the Fort's historic atmosphere.

The project included:

  • Repair or replacement of mechanical, electrical, or fire protection and detection systems
  • Concrete and asphalt work
  • Repairs related to building renovation or demolition
  • Interior remodeling work, including carpentry, painting, floor, and wall covering
  • Renovation of historic structures
  • Repair or replacement of infrastructure systems
  • Correction of drainage problems
  • Repair or upgrade of structural problems, including seismic upgrades
  • Repair or replacement of roofing, siding, windows, doors, or other miscellaneous architectural elements

Within two months of arriving at Fort Leavenworth, MCC's staff estimated, negotiated, and started work on eight projects worth a total of $1.1 million. Government personnel told MCC staff that this was by far the best start a contractor had at Fort Leavenworth.

"MCC had the JOC contract at Ft. Leavenworth for five years. They did a very good job of executing this work. They responded promptly and accurately to RFPs. Their proposals were honest and fair and generally we could negotiate with them on line item quantities and could reach a negotiated amount for each task order without a problem. They hired good, responsive subcontractors and they seemed to have systems in place to effectively manage the work. During the course of the contract, MCC provided good quality construction, properly supervised and managed each task order."
